The AXP version, called Open Genera, is shipping now. As an integrated software development environment, Open Genera is unique because it maintains its own address space. It was designed from the start as an open operating system with an integrated set of development tools. The various tools, application code, and concurrent processing in Open Genera's environment all are treated as unique objects in a common address space. Open Genera uses a unique addressing scheme which fully utilizes the 64-bit Alpha AXP architecture. "We chose the Alpha AXP architecture because it is the best 64-bit architecture available," explains Saiid Zarrabian, Vice President of Development and Consulting. "From a technical standpoint, it is the clear winner for raw performance. From a marketing standpoint, our customers will be able to develop and deploy applications on a broad range of scalable AXP systems and take advantage of the machine's outstanding price/performance. "We have been very impressed with the Alpha AXP development platform supporting the DEC OSF/1 operating environment," says Zarrabian. "The Alpha AXP architecture offers by far the best qualified chip for us and our customers." Initially, Symbolics will provide Open Genera on the DEC 3000 Models 400 and 500 AXP workstations. Symbolics also is evaluating a potential move to the Microsoft Windows NT operating environment.
